What is an Ultrasound Guided Biopsy?

 

Also known as ultrasound biopsy, this procedure is an accurate way to take samples of tissue from within the breast that are visible on ultrasound but may not be able to be felt by you or your doctor.

Is a biopsy painful?

Most patients describe the procedure as uncomfortable but not painful.

Your procedure

  • There is no preparation for biopsies, you may eat and drink prior this procedure.
  • You may drive home afterwards.
  • You are welcome to bring a support person.
  • Please refrain from any strenuous activity for 24 hours.
  • If you are taking any anticoagulants, please let our reception team know.
  • This is always done under local anaesthetic.
  • You will probably get some bruising in the area due to the nature of this procedure. We will provide an ice pack afterwards.
  • We suggest you take paracetamol for this. We will provide paracetamol following the procedure, please wait a few hours until your next dose.

 

After your biopsy appointment

After your biopsy our receptionist will make an appointment for you to see one of our breast specialists to discuss the results. Your biopsy results will take up to 5-7 days.

As you are awaiting a result it is quite normal to feel anxious. Therefore, we encourage you to bring a support person with you to this appointment.

Please contact the us if you experience any of the following

  • Swelling at the site
  • Bleeding not controlled by pressure
  • Pain which not relieved by paracetamol
